Van Gogh Goes to Yale
By Richard Amada on Mar 27, 2009 | In Visual Arts
Yale University has launched a court battle to keep a Vincent van Gogh painting in the possession of its art gallery. The 1888 painting, The Night Café, has been in Yale's possession since a Yalie alum bequeathed it to his alma mater in the 1960s. But now a descendant of a Russian man who owned the painting until the former Soviet government nationalized the property in its communist revolution has stepped forward to lay a claim on the art.
According to the Associated Press, Yale has filed suit to assert its claim to ownership of the painting.
