Balloon Payment
By Richard Amada on Nov 23, 2011 | In General
Ordinarily, if someone wants to utilize an image of a cartoon character you've created, they've got to pay you for that privilege. After all, licensing rights are a valuable piece of intellectual property.
But publicity is also valuable. So when you see those big balloons in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, the character's licensing agents aren't getting paid. The exact opposite happens. Those who hold the rights to the cartoon characters turned into giant inflatables actually pay the parade's producers to have the character included in the annual march. According to various reports, the going rate to have your cartoon character go floating down 34th Street is somewhere between $190,000 and $350,000.
