Who Owns Stolen Art?
By Richard Amada on Oct 20, 2011 | In Visual Arts
I came across an interesting essay regarding the legal ownership of stolen works of art that are sold to subsequent buyers who are unaware of the theft. The issue is whether the buyer owns the work by virtue of the fact that he made a good-faith purchase of the property, or whether the work must be returned to the person from whom it was originally stolen.
According to the essay, the answer depends on which state or country's court has jurisdiction. You can read the essay on the website of Spencer's Art Law Journal.
